One thing that might surprise you is that college essays are really short stories, and for them to be good, you will have to think more deeply about who you are (and why you are that way) than you ever have before. Without help, it's near impossible to gain that perspective on your own life, but that level of self-awareness is critical. It's what makes the reader care; what makes an admission officer rush over to her colleague and read your essay aloud.
